About Aung Myint

Aung Myint is a prominent Burmese artist born in 1946 in Yangon, Myanmar. He is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern and contemporary art in Myanmar, particularly known for his contributions to the avant-garde movement. Despite beginning his artistic journey with representational art, Aung Myint shifted towards abstract expressionism in the late 1960s. Aung Myint’s work spans various mediums, including painting, installation, and performance art. He is celebrated for his distinctive use of color, particularly red, black, and white, which he often employed to convey complex emotions and symbolic meanings. One of his most famous series, "Mother and Child," uses a single, unbroken black line to depict the emotional connection between a mother and her child—a theme deeply personal to him, as he lost his mother at a young age. Throughout his career, Aung Myint has faced and resisted censorship, especially under Myanmar's military regime, where his use of certain colors was seen as politically subversive. Despite these challenges, he co-founded the Inya Gallery of Art in 1989, a space dedicated to promoting modern art free from governmental control. His works have been exhibited internationally, and his influence extends beyond his own creations as he continues to mentor a new generation of Burmese artists. Today, Aung Myint’s artworks are housed in prestigious collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the National Gallery Singapore, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
