Overview

CHA, Myunghi (b. 1947) is a Korean artist who graduated from Seoul National University, where she specialized in Korean traditional painting (Dongyanghwa). Despite the conservative nature of Korean academic art, which often favors abstraction and minimalism, CHA has developed her own unique style. She overcame the constraints of these artistic traditions and gender stereotypes to create a distinctive approach characterized by monochromatic acrylic paintings on canvas, using a medium she developed herself. Her technique involves drawing with charcoal on the canvas before the medium dries, resulting in vibrant yet controlled lines that express a deep connection to both tradition and modernity.

CHA's work is heavily influenced by her experiences and surroundings, often depicting abstract landscapes that invite viewers to contemplate the vastness of time and space. Her paintings reflect her continuous exploration of space and form, merging the principles of Eastern aesthetics with modern artistic practices. Over her extensive career, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, contributing significantly to the evolution of Korean contemporary art. Her works are recognized for their emotional depth and innovative use of materials, which challenge traditional boundaries while staying rooted in Korean artistic heritage.
